I have been favoured to travel to a number of countries, mostly within the Mediterranean. These have been package holidays were there is little opportunity to get to know the local inhabitants. I have however been lucky enough to visit two places in Africa. Tunisia and Tanzania

In 1982, soon after my wife died in 1981, my sister Barbara very kindly invited me to stay in her home near Dar es Salaam. This was a very generous gesture for which I will be forever grateful. Her Husband was Works Manager of the British Leyland bus construction factory in Dar es Salaam,  and they occupied a bungalow with a large garden running down to the beach a few miles out of the town. Whilst it was a period of sorrow after my wife’s death there where compensations in being able to renew my relationship with my sister who was very kind to me.

It enabled me to visit the game parks of Tanzania.

Whilst in Tanzania I flew to zanzibar. Note the narrow lanes. I asked where the Post Office was and a young fellow led through lanes like these.  I wondered whether he would rob me! I used a taxi to get to a silversmiths and reached for my camera. He said that no one would steal it whilst in Zanzibar.

  1. I wish I had known that Barbara was there when I was there in 1970? But perhaps she was gone by then?

  2. I was there in 1980. I don’t know how long Barb had been in Dar at that time. It is a pity she doesn’t want to see anyone now but Parkinsons is a dreadful problem and that may be the reason.
